Environmental Management
W H Tildesley was one of the first companies in the forging sector to achieve accreditation to ISO 14001 reflecting not only the demands placed on the company by an increasingly environmentally conscious marketplace but also the real sense of environmental responsibility. The scheme requires companies to set up an effective Environmental Management System with proper controls and procedures which ensure compliance with environmental legislation and continuous improvement of Environmental performance. It has real benefits within the company and the surrounding area but also it is important for our customers that we control and monitor energy costs and waste to provide the very best product at commercially acceptable prices.
It is the policy and long term goal of W H Tildesley Ltd. to:
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive environmental management system,
- Comply fully with existing legislation, monitor proposed legislation and to perform better than is required where appropriate,
- Educate and motivate employees to behave in an environmentally-responsible manner,
- Promote environmental responsibility with clients and suppliers alike,
- Minimise the environmental aspects of all processes and to ensure that materials are recycled wherever practicable,
- Ensure that energy is used in a responsible and efficient manner
- Regularly review environmental performance at Board level,
- Develop and maintain contingency plans where significant environmental hazards exist,
- Regularly monitor environmental performance.

Quality Management
W H Tildesley is committed to ensuring that the products services we provide consistently meet the needs and expectations of our customers. WHT was one of the very first companies in the UK to receive the new BS EN ISO 9001:2008 certificate marking 17 years of continuous accreditation under the standard. This Quality Management System incorporates the company’s business operating systems and is the primary driver for continuous improvement and workforce development.
Our policy is that we shall at all times:
- Review our processes and activities against measurable objectives and use the Plan-Do-Check-Act philosophy to continuously improve the quality of the products and service provided.
- Ensure that our process are robust and capable of meeting the specific requirements defined by industry standards, international material specifications and customer order conditions at all times.
- Ensure that all personnel are trained to an appropriate level of competence and are aware of, and committed to achieving the company’s quality objectives.
- Monitor customer’s perception of our performance using 3 key performance indicators:
- On time delivery
- Customer non-conformance reports
- Customer responses to satisfaction surveys
- Address problems and complaints promptly, and incorporate preventive actions that eliminate the causes of non-conforming products.
The health and safety of all WHT employees and visitors is paramount in our activities and this is continually monitored and improved where possible. All staff are trained and assessed using a Health and Safety Passport which ensures awareness of risk, safe working practice and compliance with workplace legislation.
Our Policy is that W H Tildesley undertakes always to do the following:
- Comply with all current Health and Safety legislation.
- Ensure the collection of up-to-date information on the toxicity and potential hazards of all substances used by the company.
- Limit exposure to and, where necessary, monitor the use of substances hazardous to health.
- From time to time assess all risks as set out in the management of health and safety at work.
- Provide and maintain safe plant and equipment.
- Assess all manual handling operations and take steps to reduce the risk of injury to the lowest level reasonably practicable.
- Provide the necessary personal protective equipment required.
- Assess the risk of Noise and monitor those exposed to noise.
- Comply with the Electricity at Work Regulations.
- Ensure that every new employee receives induction on Health, Safety and Environmental matters.
- Provide adequate training to ensure all employees are competent to do their tasks.
- Provide First Aid, with qualified First Aiders.
- Ensure that contactors and visitors are aware of this Health and Safety policy and that they follow the Visitors Rules.
- Review the Policy and performance on an annual basis using the Health, Safety and Environment system.
Training and development
WHT benefits from a stable and experienced work force whose skills and competency are vital to the specialized nature of our business. The Managing Director John Tildesley is a long standing board member of the Sector Skills Council for the Metals industries responsible for the development of National Vocational Qualifications, Modern Apprenticeship schemes and workforce development programmes.
Our Policy is that the involvement and development of our workforce is central to achieving our business plan goals, among which customer satisfaction is paramount. The knowledge skills and competencies required to perform our business processes will be reviewed as part of the business planning process and training will always be made available to address any shortfall. Priority will always be given to training provision that is accredited to NVQ or appropriate standards and emphasis will always be placed on training that is required to:
· Meet and exceed the requirements of relevant legislation
· Safely and competently use equipment
· Adopt new technologies and improvement techniques
· Develop individuals to expand their responsibilities
As part of this policy all employees will receive regular briefing on the company’s performance against the Key Performance Indicators used in the management review meetings.
Continuous Improvement
Continuous improvement is a key part of all our business management systems. WHT has adopted the principles, tools and techniques of Lean Manufacturing as the primary method of creating a process improvement culture throughout the business. This is a key driver to ensure that the business remains sustainable and strives to be world class in its operation.
